Collapse of Nabil Fekir deal has allowed Daniel Sturridge to thrive

Much has been made of the recent good form showed by Daniel Sturridge for Liverpool. The resurgent forward has been excellent for the Reds, with his two recent goals against Chelsea truly catching the eye.

It is a great turnaround for a player who seemed to be at the end of his Anfield career when on loan at West Brom last term and consistently nursing injury trouble.

However, it cannot be ignored that there is a massive amount of fortune behind his form.

Liverpool would certainly not have been reliant on him as their back-up had they managed to sign their first-choice summer target.

The Reds were hot on the pursuit of the French World Cup winner Nabil Fekir this summer.

As reported by the Telegraph, Liverpool were extremely close to agreeing a £53 million move for the Frenchman this summer. It seems Liverpool flinched at his medic results, likely related to his serious knee injury in 2015.

With Liverpool needing money to ensure they snapped up Roma goalkeeper Alisson, it was clearly decided they could cope without the signature of Fekir.

That has undoubtedly played into the hands of Sturridge, who would have been pushed down the pecking order with the arrival of the Lyon star.

But whilst a huge chunk of fortune has played its part in the 29-year-old’s revival he still had to take his opportunity. For that, the Liverpool frontman deserves immense credit.
