‘Clueless’: Arsenal fans react as Unai Emery snubs Nicolas Pepe

Arsenal fans have voiced their disapproval after Nicolas Pepe was left on the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Unai Emery announced his starting line-up to face Wolves at The Emirates and Pepe was among the substitutes. After he was left out in midweek against Liverpool, this was an interesting decision.

Mesut Ozil got the nod ahead of the club’s record signing. But Arsenal fans assumed they would see Pepe at some point on Saturday afternoon. They were wrong.

Pepe on the bench

Emery made all three substitutions and snubbed Pepe. The Ivory Coast international was left on the bench as Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and then Sead Kolasinac entered the pitch.

Martinelli’s inclusion was perhaps justified after his midweek hat-trick. But Arsenal fans were scratching their head at Emery’s second change. Attacker Saka replaced holding midfielder Lucas Torreira when Arsenal were trying to defend a 1-0 lead.

Then, after Wolves equalised on 76 minutes, Arsenal fans pleaded with Emery to bring Pepe on. But instead, he did a like-for-like left-back change with Kolasinac on for Tierney.
