Club to reject Newcastle bid for CB Shearer once deemed 'very good' - report

Newcastle United have reportedly set their sights on West Ham defender Issa Diop.

French outlet L’Equipe claimed on Friday that the Magpies were lining up a bid for the Hammers centre-back.

They reported that Newcastle were planning to offer between £8.3million and £10million ‘in the coming hours’.

L’Equipe – as transcribed by – also claimed Diop was open to a move to St James’ Park.

However, subsequently reported that West Ham have no interest in letting the 24-year-old leave this month.

Newcastle are in need of bolstering their ranks in the January transfer window. Meanwhile, Diop is fourth choice in the West Ham centre-back pecking order.

Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson are ahead of him. However, Ogbonna is out long-term and Zouma is also on the sidelines with an injury.

Diop has started West Ham’s last seven Premier League games. And it looks unlikely that they’d willingly deplete their defensive ranks even further this month.

Newcastle have been linked with a myriad of defensive targets, and money isn’t really an issue for them.

They’ve already brought Kieran Trippier in and they’re bound to make more defensive signings come transfer deadline day.

Diop would’ve certainly been a good call – he’s a talented, young defender with Premier League experience, and Alan Shearer once deemed him “very good”.

That said, unless West Ham bring several new centre-backs in, they probably won’t let Diop go this month.
