Club-record fee seems steep for Jonny despite impressive performances this season

Wolves are moving ever closer to signing loanee Jonny Otto on a permanent basis before the end of the transfer window, according to the Express and Star.

They report that the Old Gold are willing to match the club-record £18m they paid to bring Adama Traore to Molineux during the summer to make the Spanish international’s loan deal concrete.

Jonny’s parent club Atletico Madrid are apparently open to the prospect of selling him this month and the deal is expected to be completed before Thursday’s deadline.

The defender has been impressive during his loan spell, but £18m remains an awful lot of money for a full-back, especially to a newly-promoted club.

If Atletico are prepared to let Jonny leave, perhaps Wolves could negotiate a cheaper deal – but it is also understandable that Nuno Santo wants to tie down a player who has been so impressive so this season.

There is the prospect that this deal will raise the ceiling for what Wolves are prepared to pay, but it would make more sense for a big money January swoop to come for a proven goalscorer.

But it all contributes towards Wolves building for next season and contrasts directly with a rival in the chase for seventh – Everton – who are still sweating on the future of loanee Andre Gomes.
