Arsenal and New England Revolution have agreed terms for Matt Turner to join the Gunners in summer, according to the MLS club’s website.

New England confirmed the news on their official website on Friday afternoon, agreeing an undisclosed transfer fee with the Gunners.

“The New England Revolution have agreed to terms for goalkeeper Matt Turner to join Arsenal of the English Premier League in a summer transfer for an undisclosed fee pending completion of a medical,” they wrote.

“Turner, the 2021 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, is expected to join Arsenal in late June 2022, allowing the United States international to remain with New England through the entirety of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League campaign and nearly half of the 2022 MLS regular season.

“Further information will be shared when the transfer is completed.”

Speculation linking Arsenal with Turner has been ongoing since the January transfer window.

Indeed, people close to the 27-year-old were saying the deal was as good as done weeks ago.

In January, the Evening Standard quoted United States head coach Gregg Berhalter as saying: “I think it is just a great story.

“I hope the public is aware of this ascent of Matt Turner – because it is an incredible story.

“He went to Fairfield College, undrafted out of college, and now he’s playing with the national team and he’s headed to Arsenal.”

According to football.london, however, Arsenal won’t make an announcement until June when he flies to England to complete his medical.

The Gunners are unwilling to officially confirm the transfer until that process is complete, added the report.

“He’s a good student of the game”

Turner became first-choice at New England in 2018 and has been a mainstay in between the sticks ever since.

He has made 107 league, cup and playoff appearances for his club.

Turner was MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 and was also the MVP of the MLS All-Star Game.

The 6ft 3in ace has enjoyed a similar rise at international level, making 16 appearances for the USMNT.

In June last year, New England head coach Bruce Arena described Turner as “remarkable“.

“He’s improved greatly,” Fotmob quoted Arena as saying.

“He continues to improve, he works real hard, he’s a good student of the game, a great person.”
