One club are now willing to break their transfer record to lure a player away from Liverpool this summer.
Michael Edwards, who made headlines in his previous role as Director of Football at Anfield, is now back on Merseyside as CEO of Football, where he could once again secure a huge profit.
The 45-year-old previously earned Liverpool millions after selling the likes of Jordon Ibe, Brad Smith, Mamadou Sakho, Danny Ward, Dominic Solanke and Danny Ings for significant profits.
So, which Liverpool player could now be the subject of a club-record transfer deal? Let’s take a look…
PSV Eindhoven ready to spend big on Sepp van den Berg
A story from Eindhovens Dagblad in the Netherlands now claims that PSV Eindhoven are willing to make Sepp van den Berg their record signing this summer.
Peter Bosz – Manager of PSV Eindhoven – has made the Dutchman his No.1 target as the Eredivisie outfit search for a new central defender, and those in the boardroom are ready to spend €16m (£13.4m) to make it happen.
If accepted, that would signal a new record signing for PSV Eindhoven, whose current record deal is the €15m (£12.6m) spent to bring Hirving Lozano back from Napoli in September 2023.
However, it sounds like €16m (£13.4m) will not be enough.
Eindhovens Dagblad believe Liverpool are requesting €20m (£16.8m) to sell Van den Berg – who only cost £1.3m in a deal from PEC Zwolle in June 2019 – with VfB Stuttgart also keen to sign the central defender.

Slot would be happy to part ways with the 22-year-old if the asking price is met, despite the fact his fellow countryman has impressed so far in pre-season at the AXA Training Centre.
Bologna are also said to be looking at Van den Berg as a replacement for Riccardo Calafiori – who is seemingly heading for Arsenal – while Brentford have been linked as well.
Liverpool should keep the Dutchman
Edwards is seemingly hunting for a new central defender to replace Joel Matip, amid interest in Crystal Palace No.6 Marc Guehi and Lille No.15 Leny Yoro – who now looks set to join Manchester United.
However, the CEO of Football at Anfield needn’t bother, as we believe Van den Berg is worth trying out.
The man from Zwolle was statistically the best central defender under the age of 23 in Europe’s top five leagues last season during his loan spell at Mainz 05 – as WhoScored shows.

Van den Berg also recently kicked off about his lack of recognition at Liverpool, ever since his arrival back in 2019, so he is clearly itching to play for the Reds.
