Carlisle United director of football Dean Holdsworth has told the News & Star that the League Two side have received bids for 18-year-old winger Liam McCarron this summer – amid reports linking him with Leeds United.
The youngster broke into Carlisle’s side last season and clocked up 20 appearances for the club. With just 12 months remaining on his current contract, it appears Championship and Premier League clubs have become interested.
The Daily Mail claimed Leeds are ready to make a £250,000 bid to sign McCarron from Carlisle, but face competition from bitter Championship rivals Derby County and Premier League new boys Sheffield United.
Holdsworth confirmed that Carlisle have received offers from clubs in the top two divisions of English football, but ruled out naming any interested parties. Holdsworth also stated that any interested parties must pay a fair price.

“We have had bids from a Championship club and had conversations with a Premier League club regarding Liam. That is ongoing,” Holdsworth said.
“If a club does come through the door now, they’ve got to pay the amount we feel in terms of compensation and for the potential [he has] going forward, whether that’s Premier League, Championship and beyond.
Holdsworth’s comments sound as though he is resigned to losing starlet McCarron this summer. So it is down to who can convince the youngster that their club is the best path for his success.
Sheffield United are known for bringing youth through, as are Derby County. But Leeds perhaps have had the most success with young players being given a chance, especially under Marcelo Bielsa.
It remains to be seen who McCarron will choose, but starring in Leeds’ under-23 side next season will give the winger a big chance of breaking into the senior Leeds side – especially with the Whites needing wingers.
