‘Closed the door’: Sky Sports commentators amazed by ‘expert’ defending in 73rd minute from Tottenham player last night

Sky Sports commentators Andy Hinchcliffe and Bill Leslie were amazed by a piece of ‘expert’ defending from Tottenham Hotspur man Cristian Romero last night. 

Spurs got back to winning ways at the Amex Stadium after an improved display against the Seagulls.

Harry Kane grabbed what turned out to be the winning goal for his side in the 22nd minute. The Spurs star reacted brilliantly to what appeared to be a Heung-Min Son shot.

Antonio Conte’s side started the game brightly and were the better side for the opening half an hour of the game. But the Spurs backline had to defend resolutely during the second-half.

And in the 73rd minute, Romero produced a vital interception that led to high praise from the Sky commentators. 

Commentators amazed by Romero

Romero played a slightly awkward pass into Richarlison and the Brazilian gave the ball away to Brighton man Adam Webster in a dangerous area for Spurs.

And after a swift move from Roberto De Zerbi’s men, it seemed that Danny Welbeck had presented Leandro Trossard with a clear-cut chance to level the scoring.

But Romero was in the perfect position to deny the Belgian and then calmly passed the ball to Matt Doherty.

The moment earned the 24-year-old high praise from Hinchcliffe and Leslie on Sky Sports’ coverage of the game. 

Leslie said: “Romero closed the door expertly.”

“It’s good defending from Romero, when you’ve got players like Trossard who are always on the move, always mobile, you’ve got to be aware of the space they’re going to run into, and deny those attackers that type of space and that’s exactly what Romero did.” Hinchcliffe added. 

Romero has been slightly off the pace for Spurs since returning from an injury he suffered in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

But the Argentine defender seems to be getting back to his best once again after commanding displays against both Brighton and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Spurs defended admirably against the Seagulls last night and have now kept consecutive clean sheets in their last two games. Conte will be hoping his side can continue their defensive solidarity and that Romero will continue to improve after coming back from injury.
