Clinton Morrison has told BBC Sport (Sunday, 17.59pm) that he believes Tottenham Hotspur star Tanguy Ndombele was left “frustrated” after Jose Mourinho decided to replace the Frenchman on 65 minutes against Chelsea.
Last week, Gio Lo Celso came off the bench to score against Manchester City and that will have been in Mourinho’s thinking when he decided to take Ndombele off – and replace him with Lo Celso. Ndombele, though, had impressed.
Ndombele, 23, has now started seven consecutive Premier League matches for Tottenham but has failed to complete 90 minutes in any one of those games. Mourinho has been rotating his squad in order to keep everyone fresh, given the schedule.
Former Premier League striker Morrison claimed Ndombele had been Tottenham’s best player on Sunday as the two sides drew 0-0 at Stamford Bridge, and claimed that Mourinho’s decision to take him off, left him “frustrated”.
“It’s frustrating. Ndombele has been Tottenham’s best player. He has been brilliant so far this season. But Lo Celso came on last week so hopefuly this change will turn out to be a masterstroke from Mourinho,” Morrison said. “Ndombele is frustrated.”
TBR’s view – Does Ndombele need to be trusted more?
Clearly, Ndombele is the first man Mourinho looks to when making a sub. Yes, the France international has done well to fight back into the starting XI after being ostracised last season – but he now needs to make the next step.
As a somewhat attacking midfielder, Ndombele needs a little bit more confidence to finally reach the potential he is capable of. A couple of goals and assists would certainly help with that – or a couple of 90 minute matches. He deserves to be trusted more.
