Former Premier League striker and Tottenham Hotspur fan Clinton Morrison would have loved to have seen Philippe Coutinho join Spurs amid recent shock rumours of a loan move to north London.
Coutinho was the number one trend on Twitter in the UK on Tuesday evening as various reports began to link the playmaker with a move to Arsenal, and then Tottenham.
The Barcelona star has endured a torrid time at the Nou Camp since his transfer in January 2018, and it is understood the club would like him off their books.
Speaking about the links, Morrison said on talkSPORT: “I would love him to go to Tottenham.
“He’s a fantastic player. Being a Tottenham fan, the reason I’d love to see him go there is, if they do lose Christian Eriksen, I think he’s the perfect fit to replace him.
“Taking on people, he’s better than Eriksen in a one-on-one situation and I think he’ll score more goals than Eriksen.”
Coutinho would certainly have been an exciting signing for Spurs fans, although reports (BBC Sport) on Wednesday are now suggesting a move won’t happen.
Morrison is correct to say Coutinho is better than Eriksen in terms of beating a player, and he arguably is a greater goal threat.
It looks as though Coutinho won’t be signing for Spurs after all the talk, which would be a real shame if Eriksen did go on to leave before Thursday’s deadline.
Certainly there is very little to seperate the pair in terms of quality and Morrison’s views are likely shared by many Tottenham fans, who will now be hoping to see Paulo Dybala and/or Giovani Lo Celso signed instead.
