Clinton Morrison believes Spurs target Tyrick Mitchell has got huge potential
Clinton Morrison believes that newly capped England left-back Tyrick Mitchell has “huge potential”.
Fresh after making his Three Lions debut in the 2-1 win against Switzerland, Gareth Southgate handed the Crystal Palace star his first start for the senior national side in the 3-0 win against Ivory Coast.
The 22-year-old has been ever present under Patrick Vieira in the Premier League this season, starting all of the Eagles’ 29 top-flight matches and racking up 2,601 minutes.
According to the Sun, Tottenham and Newcastle are interested in Mitchell, whose reputation is growing rapidly.
Clinton Morrison raves about Tyrick Mitchell
With an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on the horizon and the Selhurst Park side 12th in the Premier League table, Mitchell is flourishing under the stewardship of Vieira.
With his Palace contract running until 2025 and Mitchell now an England international, interested clubs may have to break the bank to sign Palace’s number three.
Sky Sports pundit and former Palace forward Clinton Morrison has praised Mitchell, who has been with the Eagles since joining from Brentford six years ago.
Speaking on BBCs Wednesday Night Club, Morrison said: “He’s been outstanding. Huge credit must go to Vieira because they’re working ever so well.
“He’s come through the academy, I speak to Dougie Freedman quite a lot and he told me he’d be a star, we haven’t brought in another left-back because he’s the one, and he did say to me he thinks he’ll play for England.
“I’ve watched him a lot this season and you see a lot of wingers, and they don’t get the better of him.
“I always knew his defending was brilliant, but I just thought can he go forward? He’s still working on that side of his game, but his link up with Wilfried Zaha has been outstanding and he’s got huge potential.”
Only Brentford’s Christian Norgaard (109) has attempted more tackles than Mitchell (97) in the Premier League this season.
Steadily building a reputation for being one of the best one-v-one defenders in the top-flight, only Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne (69.4%) has a better percentage for the number of dribbles tackled than the Palace ace (69%).
