Tottenham Hotspur defender Clement Lenglet looks far better than Ben Davies at the moment – a player who Antonio Conte thinks is ‘perfect’ for his position.

Lenglet made the switch to north London over the summer on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

The Frenchman has been battling it out for the left-sided centre back role with Davies this season. The £97,000-a-week man has started just six times under Conte, but has looked the part so far.

The Italian boss previously described his competition in Davies as the ‘perfect’ player for the left-sided role in his back-three.

“I think he is having an amazing season. I think this position is perfect for him. Conte told BBC Sport back in May.

“It happened the same with Azpilicueta when I was at Chelsea, if you remember when we started to play at three at the back, he became one of the central defenders.

“Ben Davies is playing in a fantastic way like Dier and don’t forget Sanchez, he has played two amazing games for Romero.”

Davies enjoyed a fantastic campaign under Conte last season and was arguably one of the most consistent performers in the side.

Yet, the Welshman has struggled to hit the same heights so far this season. Picking up a knee injury which ruled him out of the games against Leicester City and Arsenal haven’t helped him find consistent form.

But at this moment in time, Lenglet looks to be a class above when he’s played in the role this season.

Lenglet looks far better than Davies

The Frenchman endured a difficult period at Barca after making a promising start to his career with the La Liga giants.

But he seems to be finding his feet once again at Spurs and starting to show the promise he displayed during his time at Sevilla.

The 27-year-old boasts brilliant abilities on the ball, including his range of passing and composure. Spurs look a much more balanced side with him starting on the left side of the back-three.

Crisitan Romero is by far Tottenham’s most accomplished defender in terms of his ability on the ball. But Conte’s men can become slightly predictable when they rely on the Argentine too heavily.

Lenglet brings these types of qualities to the opposite flank when he’s in the side, which makes Spurs much more of a threat going forward.

Davies has shown he is capable of contributing to Tottenham’s attacking play but he is playing far from his best right now.

It seems like the right time for Conte to give Lenglet a proper run in the side with Davies playing below-par at the moment.
