Former Celtic striker and academy product Cillian Sheridan has urged his old club on Twitter to replace interim manager Neil Lennon with Chris Hughton, after the latter was sacked by Brighton.
Lennon is coming under fire despite securing Celtic’s eighth consecutive Scottish Premiership title, and keeping the Hoops on course for a triple treble with the Scottish Cup final this month.
But the former Hoops captain could do nothing as his lacklustre Celtic side could do nothing to prevent Old Firm enemies Rangers from winning 2-0, with goals coming from James Tavernier and Scott Arfield.
Sheridan, who scored four goals in 17 games after breaking into the senior side and is currently playing for Australian A-League Wellington Phoenix, urged Celtic to go after 60-year-old boss Hughton.
TBR’s view
Lennon’s side have drastically reduced in goal threat since he replaced Brendan Rodgers in February. Though they have been solid in defence, Celtic have struggled massively going forward.
Is it Lennon’s fault? Or is it that Celtic have simply already one the Scottish Premiership title, and have taken their foot off the gas? Perhaps, it is the latter – but the Scottish Cup final could determine a lot.
Hughton would be an excellent appointment. Taking Brighton from near Championship relegation to another season in the Premier League is superb. Plenty of contacts from the Premier League, he would be a big improvement on Lennon.
