RB Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund believes Erling Haaland could wind up moving to Liverpool at some point.

At the moment, the Norwegian striker is enjoying a fruitful spell at Borussia Dortmund, whom he joined in 2019 for a reported fee of £17.1 million (BBC Sport).

Since signing for the Bundesliga outfit, Haaland has gone on to become one of the world’s top strikers, plundering 24 goals in just 27 games.

The star, still only 20, has blown fans away with his deadly finishing and frightening speed, and there is little doubt he currently stands to become world-class – if he isn’t already.

There has already been talk about when Haaland might leave Dortmund to play for a bigger club, with Manchester United having been linked.

Liverpool have also previously been mentioned as a possible destination, and that is something Freund can see happening.

Lothar Mattheus said on Sky90 (quoted by Bild): “I think of the big clubs, not necessarily Bayern Munich, because Robert Lewandowski will still play for the next two or three years and Haaland will probably not stay in Dortmund that long. But then Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester or Klopp are looking for a successor to Firmino…”

That prompted Freund to say (in reference to Liverpool according to Bild): “That is where it will land.”

TBR’s View – Haaland would take Liverpool to the next level

Haaland would simply be an outrageous signing for Liverpool.

The star has been clinical ever since his breakthrough with Salzburg in 2019, and the evidence is there to suggest he can become perhaps the best in the world in a few years.

With Firmino getting older, perhaps Liverpool will feel Haaland – who is said to have a €75 million/£67 million release clause that becomes active in 2022 (bulinews.com) – would make a quality replacement.
