Former Liverpool defender Christian Ziege has been talking about his career and regrets his brief spell at Liverpool under Gerard Houllier.

He told the Daily Mail that the Frenchman had a problem with him which meant he didn’t play him enough but didn’t explain it, which means he regrets the £5.5 million Anfield switch.

Ziege said: “I didn’t play enough and still don’t know why. I scored a penalty in the shootout to win the League Cup but then didn’t play in the FA or UEFA Cup finals.

“Gerard Houllier had a problem that he never bothered to explain. It made me think, ‘If I’m a coach, I’ll always tell my players the truth’.”

TBR’s View – Previous Liverpool managers lacked the warmth Klopp has

The likes of Houllier and Rafa Benitez brought trophies to Anfield but had a management style which was clinical and lacked warmth, like Ziege describes.

Klopp has taken the club to another level by connecting with the club on an emotional level and tapping into the passion of the fans.

It’s hard to envisage him not being straight up with Ziege like Houllier was and it just goes to show how he has taken the club to a higher plane and is in tune with the man-management side of the game more than Houllier was.
