Aston Villa’s CEO Christian Purslow has teased the club’s transfer plans for the summer transfer window.

Speaking to VillaTV via Birmingham Live, Purslow revealed that ‘extremely precise plans’ are in place for this summer. The former Liverpool managing director also hinted that ‘smart signings’ will be brought in to improve Dean Smith’s squad.

From 17th to 11th in 12 months

Villa built on from their tense comeback year in the English top-flight by finishing 11th in the standings. The Birmingham-based club survived the drop in the 2019/10 season by a single point.

The likes of Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez have greatly improved the squad this season, and Purslow has hinted that similar signings will be made this summer.

The Villa CEO said: “I’d expect players who came in last year to continue to improve into next season and, as I say, with a couple of smart signings in the summer that will make us even stronger.”

Villa can continue trend of smart summer signings this year

It would be an understatement to say that Villa’s 2020 signings played a part in their leap up the standings.

Martinez was one of the top goalkeepers in the division, and Watkins netted 14 goals in his debut top-flight season. Cash also formed a cornerstone for a defence that kept 15 clean sheets, the third-highest in the Premier League.

And it wasn’t just last summer’s signings who flourished. Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings had their best seasons yet in the backline. Whilst Anwar El-Ghazi bagged an impressive ten goals in the Premier League alone.

Villa’s summer signings have played a huge role in the club’s massive development on the pitch in the past 12 months. And this year could see a similar situation if Smith signs the right players with the right profiles to improve the squad.
