Arsenal have been linked with what would arguably be one of the most surprising transfers in recent memory, with Calcio News 24 recently reporting that the Gunners are set to be offered a swap deal involving Granit Xhaka and Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen has endured a poor time since joining Inter Milan this year. And it has now been suggested that the Dane could be offered in exchange as the Nerazzurri look to land the Swiss.
Of course, a swap being agreed would be a shock given Eriksen’s connections to Arsenal’s bitter rivals. He spent the best part of seven years in North London before his switch to Italy.
So you could certainly understand if Arsenal supporters were not getting carried away with the rumours at this stage. The Gunners reaching an agreement with Eriksen looks unlikely enough before you factor in that Xhaka could have to agree an exit as part of the same deal.
But it would be fascinating if Eriksen did end up at the Emirates – particularly given that he was asked about comparisons with Mesut Ozil back in 2013.
‘It is nice to be compared’
At the time, the pair had only just arrived in the Premier League. And Eriksen felt, at that stage, that he was not at the level to be put in the same category. However, he did admit to appreciating the suggestion.
“I think Ozil has achieved a little bit more than me! I am a few years younger and still have to learn a lot but it is nice to be compared,” he told the Daily Mirror.
“From what I have heard, it is not good to be compared with Arsenal players! But really, it is pretty cool to be compared with such big players.”
The comments are interesting given the situation Ozil finds himself in. It is currently difficult to see the 32-year-old – who earns £350,000-a-week (via Daily Mail) – playing for Mikel Arteta’s men again.
Both players appear to need moves from their current clubs right now. But perhaps, Eriksen’s move could end up with the former Spurs man quashing any faint hope of Ozil getting another chance.
