Christian Atsu has been quoted by GhanaWeb as saying that he hopes to remain at Newcastle United for “many years”, and is desperate for Rafa Benitez to remain as the club’s manager.
The 27-year-old had a somewhat indifferent season at St. James’ Park last season, as he was relegated to the bench following the arrival of club-record signing Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United.
However, he still clocked up 28 Premier League appearances as Rafa Benitez pushed the Toon towards Premier League safety for the second season in succession, despite working on a shoe string.
Dropping to the bench may had led to question marks about his future, but Atsu claimed that he is desperate to remain at Newcastle for a long time. He has two years remaining on his £30,000-a-week contract (Spotrac).
“I’m very happy at Newcastle,” Atsu said. “I’m happy with fans, especially the manager Rafa Benitez and the entire staff. I would love to stay there for many years but it will depend on me and my performance. I have to do my job.”
Atsu may not be one of the best players in the Newcastle squad, but his dedication and commitment to the cause sees him loved by many among the St. James’ Park terraces.
Joining the club for £6million (Guardian) in the summer of 2017 after his initial loan spell, Atsu is now just two appearances away from reaching a century of matches for Newcastle.
The Toon need to keep the Ghana international, even if it as cover, for the likes of Almiron and other wingers.
