Chris Wood admits excitement at facing Leeds United this season

Former Leeds United striker Chris Wood has been speaking about the West Yorkshire side’s return to Premier League football.

Wood spent the two seasons at Elland Road, scoring an impressive 30 goals in 48 games in his second campaign.

That resulted in a reported (The Sun) £15 million move to Burnley in 2017.

However, the New Zealand international still has a soft spot for the club and is clearly looking forward to facing off against some old friends later this season – even if, due to the current global health crisis, it may be at an empty Elland Road.

“It will be nice to go back there [Elland Road] and play, it would be even better if it was a full house,” Wood explained to the Burnley Express. “I experienced it when I played for them and it was a great atmosphere. It will be nice to see them back in the Premier League and see what they can do.”

It is perhaps a testament to the excellent work done by Marcelo Bielsa that many of the current Leeds team were at the West Yorkshire club when Wood was.

The likes of Kalvin Phillips, Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper, and Stuart Dallas have become mainstays of the Argentine’s team. When Wood left, it would have been a bold take to suggest those players were ever going to be Premier League standard.

But they have all improved immensely under the current management and Leeds will no doubt have their eyes on outperforming both Wood and fellow ex-White Charlie Taylor in the Premier League this season.
