Pundit Chris Sutton has urged Celtic to hand Neil Lennon “substantial funds” in the transfer market to build his own team.

The Bhoys completed the domestic treble at the weekend for the third season in succession, as they beat Hearts in the Scottish Cup final.

Brendan Rodgers managed at Parkhead for seven of the nine trophies, but Lennon stepped in as interim boss to get the club over the line in the league and Scottish Cup.

They announced after the Hearts win that Lennon had been offered the position of permanent manager.

Ex-Celtic striker Sutton believes his former side need to hand Lennon a budget to help him rebuild the team in the summer.

“Celtic need to do work to keep them (Rangers) in the wing mirrors,” Sutton wrote in the Daily Record.

“To do that, Lennon must be handed substantial funds to create the side he wants. It will be then, and only then, when we will all see the real show of faith for the manager.”

TBR’s View:

Lennon’s done enough to earn the manager’s job permanently at Celtic and it would have been quite hard to ignore him after getting the team over the line in their pursuit of the treble.

But there is plenty of work needed if they want to continue their domestic dominance next year, as Old Firm rivals Rangers have started to close the gap and should be stronger during another season under manager Steven Gerrard.

Lennon is back in the hotseat for a second time and there is work to be done to turn the squad into his own.
