Chris Sutton thinks ‘phenomenal’ 37-year-old may end up managing Manchester United

Manchester United could soon be in the market for a new manager.

The Red Devils sit seventh in the Premier League, nine points off the top four, and history tells you, this sort of form usually leads to a managerial sacking at Old Trafford.

Erik Ten Hag may not be long for the Old Trafford hotseat, and if Manchester United are searching for a new manager soon, they may want to look at someone they know very well.

Indeed, speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off Podcast, Chris Sutton has tipped Kieran McKenna to eventually end up back at United after spending time at Old Trafford as a coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

McKenna could be back at United

Sutton spoke about the ‘phenomenal’ 37-year-old manager alongside Ian Ladyman.

“At number three, Kieran McKenna. I’m a Norwich fan, but there’s a begrudging admiration for the job he’s done. Promoted last season, they’ve been flying this season, but they may be lucky to hang onto him because bigger clubs may be looking and thinking they want a piece of him,” Sutton said.

“It’s fair to say nobody saw that coming when he left Manchester United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching team. Nobody thought he would do what he did,” Ladyman said.

“He could be back there one day, he could be back there,” Sutton said.

Why not?

McKenna has been utterly brilliant for Ipswich, and he may be ready for a big job.

Of course, McKenna isn’t a big name manager and that counts against him, but when has that been an issue before?

Everyone has to start somewhere, and we’ve seen time and time again at clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid that promoting from within can work a charm, and McKenna could be the answer to a few of United’s problems at the moment.

United have tried everything else, so why not go for a young manager with a point to prove rather than another huge name who’s eyeing a payday above anything else?
