Chris Sutton claims ‘committed’ Arsenal star is a candidate to be Gunners captain

Former Chelsea and Celtic striker, Chris Sutton, has claimed that Kieran Tierney could well be considered to be the next Arsenal captain due to his level of commitment.

Tierney got himself on the scoresheet for the Gunners as they smashed five past Norwich yesterday. The Scot rolled the ball into the corner after being played in by the impressive Martin Odegaard. The former Celtic man is thought to be among the Arsenal leadership group, although he is not yet club captain.

That role fell to Alex Lacazette this weekend. And in fairness to the Frenchman, he was brilliant again as he helped the young players around him find space.

Skipper

But according to Sutton, it is indeed former Celtic man Tierney who could be the next Arsenal captain. Speaking on Radio 5 Live (as relayed by the Daily Record), Sutton responded in agreement to a Gunners fan who suggested Tierney as skipper.

I’ve always followed him closely because of his time up at Celtic, getting into the team at a young age.The thing I like about Tierney, I don’t think he’s the finished article yet, but he is so, so committed in every game,” Sutton said.

“That’s why a lot of Arsenal fans would give him the captaincy. Robbie (Savage) said the same this evening, and you agree with him, Daniel. That is because of that. It is fair to say that Arsenal have lacked leaders over the years and that’s one of the issues Mikel Arteta has had to deal with.”

Tierney has quickly made the left-back slot his own again after Nuno Tavares was given a chance recently.

TBR’s View: Tierney Will Captain Arsenal One Day

And it might not be this season. But it looks to be written in the stars for the Scot to be the main man at Arsenal in the future.

He just plays the game the right way. And as Sutton says, his commitment to the cause makes him the ideal candidate for the job.

For now, he just needs to keep playing well for Arsenal. If he does that, and keeps showing maturity, then he will definitely get the armband eventually.
