Chris Sutton suggests where Rangers have edge on Celtic

Chris Sutton has told BT Sport’s pre-match coverage of Rangers’s latest Scottish Premiership fixture (broadcast on 24/11; 12:08) that it is up front that Steven Gerrard’s men have the edge over Celtic.

It appears that the two Old Firm rivals are gearing up for an incredibly exciting title race. The two sides are tied at the top of the table, having each only dropped points on two occasions so far.

And it is a similar story in the top goalscorer charts. Both Jermain Defoe and Odsonne Edouard have already reached double figures. Meanwhile, Alfredo Morelos has got nine in the league having been even more lethal in Europe.

And with Leigh Griffiths Celtic’s second-highest scoring striker with two league goals to his name, Sutton suggested that up front is one area where Rangers look to have an advantage.

He told BT Sport: “This is where, at the moment, they have the edge on Celtic, because if Celtic get an injury to Edouard, do they have the backup? Rangers have Defoe, who’s a phenomenal finisher. And Morelos is in the form of his life, isn’t he.”

While Rangers have the advantage up front, Celtic have scored more goals so far this term. The Hoops’ midfielders have certainly been a lot more prolific than the Gers’ players in the middle of the park.

The only other Rangers players to have scored more than two league goals are Ryan Jack, Connor Goldson and James Tavernier. Meanwhile, Celtic have three other players who have scored four or more.

But it is not difficult to see why some would suggest that Rangers would become the favourites should Celtic lose Edouard to any sort of significant injury over the coming months.
