BBC pundit Chris Sutton has branded Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte as a ‘whinger’ and claimed that he always makes excuses after defeats.

Spurs have now lost back-to-back games in the Premier League – first to Manchester United and then to Newcastle at home at the weekend. Their performances have been awful, but Conte’s side are still third in the table.

Chris Sutton says Tottenham manager Antonio Conte is a ‘whinger’

After Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United – a game in which Spurs conceded 28 shots – Conte came out and made a worrying admission.

He conceded that the Red Devils fully deserved to win the game before claiming that his players were ‘scared’ (The Athletic).

Sutton could not believe Conte said that. He wasn’t happy at all with the Tottenham boss and had a go at him, calling him a ‘whinger’ who always makes excuses when his side loses a game.

The pundit said on The Monday Night Club on BBC Sport: “Spurs have been flat track bullies as such, when they have come up against anyone really good they have fallen short.

“Conte said after the Manchester United game that his team were a bit scared. I mean, really?

“That’s an amazing thing to say and he’s a bit of a whinger, like it or not, there’s always an excuse there. He’d been in a year and we have only just started or something along those lines, come on, he’s been in a year his team has started to take shape.”

Only Conte knows what he meant with his comments after the defeat at Manchester United, but the one thing that’s clear is that their performance was simply not good enough.

You can’t allow a team to have 28 shots at goal and expect to come away with anything. If Hugo Lloris wasn’t as good as he was, the scoreline would’ve been an embarrassing one for Spurs.

The North Londoners had to bounce back in the following game, but they were really poor again. Newcastle picked up a 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Conte, this time, blamed the result on injuries and lack of squad depth (Eurosport).

Spurs take on Sporting in the Champions League tomorrow night. They lost the away fixture in Portugal a few weeks ago, and if they suffer another defeat now, their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition will hang in the balance.
