Liverpool maintained their seven-point gap over Arsenal with a win over Wolves on Sunday.
Indeed, Liverpool got over the line against Wolves, despite a difficult game at Anfield, and the pressure was on just 24 hours after Arsenal had beaten Leicester City.
Arsenal beat Leicester 2-0 thanks to a late brace from Mikel Merino who was utilised in a makeshift number nine role.
Merino earned plaudits after the game, and it would appear as though Arsenal may have a new attacking saviour.
However, speaking on It’s All Kicking Off, Chris Sutton has been discussing Merino’s stint as a striker for Arsenal, and he reckons that Arne Slot may be quite happy to see Arsenal using Merino up front as it’s a sign that Arsenal are really lacking attacking options.

Arne Slot may be happy to see Mikel Merino up front
Sutton spoke about Merino’s stint as a striker and how that’s likely to have gone down at Anfield.
The pundit believes that Arne Slot would probably be quietly happy to see Merino up front, stating that the Liverpool manager would be very satisfied with his attacking options when compared to Arsenal’s at the moment.
“If I’m Liverpool at the weekend, I’m pretty happy, I’m pretty bullish. It’s not going to be perfect all the time,” Sutton said.
And Wolves have actually got some good players, but Liverpool got over the line. The Everton one was a bit of a sore one, but with the last game at Goodison and everything which came with that, that would have felt like a defeat. And it certainly was two points dropped.
But if this is a blip, then heaven help everybody else. But if I’m Arne Slot and I’m looking at Arsenal and Mikel Merino playing as a centre-forward, I’m quite satisfied with the array of firepower that Liverpool have on their bench”
Liverpool’s attacking options compared to Arsenal
Sutton says Slot will be satisfied with his attacking options compared to Arsenal, and it’s easy to understand why.
Indeed, Arsenal are down to the bare bones in terms of what they have in their attack right now.
| Liverpool attacking options | Premier League goals this season | Arsenal attacking options | Premier League goals this season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mohamed Salah | 23 | 5 | |
| Luis Diaz | 9 | 9 | |
| Darwin Nunez | 4 | 3 | |
| Diogo Jota | 5 | 6 | |
| Federico Chiesa | 0 | Ethan Nwaneri | 3 |
| 8 | Leandro Trossard | 4 | |
| Raheem Sterling | 0 | ||
| Mikel Merino | 3 | ||
| Total PL goals of available players | 41 | Total PL goals of available players | 10 |
Liverpool, quite simply, have a lot more goals in their side, and, as simple as it sounds, goals win games.
Ethan Nwaneri has received plenty of praise for his performances as of late, and he is a fantastic player, but a 17-year-old is never the answer halfway through the season when you need to kick on to win the Premier League.
Merino may have been the hero for Arsenal at the weekend, but Slot will know that isn’t necessarily a sustainable situation.
