Chris Sutton says Celtic have got to bring Southampton star back to Parkhead

Chris Sutton has said in his Daily Record column that he is fed up with Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain following the 4-3 defeat to Cluj and Champions League exit on Tuesday – and Sutton wants a Premier League stopper signed.

Bain, 27, was at fault for Cluj’s third goal as he parried a shot straight to Cluj attacker Billel Omrani, who netted the crucial equaliser for the Romanian side to make it 3-3. Bain was also questionable in Cluj’s fourth.

The former Dundee goalkeeper was slow off his line and Sutton wants his old club to bring Forster back to Celtic, five years after leaving the Hoops to join Southampton. He has three years left on his £70,000-a-week contract.

Indeed, Ralph Hasenhuttl prefers both Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn to Forster, and the six-time England international is the perfect man to replace Scotland cap Bain – according to Hoops legend Sutton.

“Scott Bain’s goalkeeping for the third goal proved what I’ve been saying for ages,” Sutton said. “Celtic need a better keeper and Fraser Forster is available. The sight of Bain kicking a free-kick away from 30 yards in the first half helped to unsettle everyone.”

TBR’s view – Forster an incredible signing for Celtic

Forster has three Scottish Premiership titles to his name following his time at Celtic, after playing 197 times for the Scottish champions. In that time, he has tallied up a mammoth 101 clean sheets.

Indeed, the impressive stats from Forster’s time north of the border keep on coming. He conceded just 157 goals in his spell at Celtic, less than a goal a game which is an excellent record.

Southampton are likely to want to rid themselves of Forster on a free, or as soon as possible. The only issue is whether Celtic can convince Forster to take a pay cut.
