Chris Sutton says Celtic 23-year-old needs to play on Tuesday
Chris Sutton has urged Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou to start Odsonne Edouard on Tuesday in a crucial European fixture.
The Hoops host FC Midtjylland on Tuesday night in the first leg of a Champions League second qualifying round tie.
They will play their home fixture in a few days time, so it’s crucial they try gain some kind of advantage ahead of the away leg in Denmark.
Celtic played a pre-season match on Saturday evening in preparation for the European showdown, but were beaten 1-0 by English Championship opposition Preston North End. Ben Whiteman’s penalty proved decisive.
Bhoys centre-forward Edouard got around half an hour in his legs with a cameo appearance from the bench in the second half.
The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit, with the Daily Record previously reporting AC Milan are likely to be interested in his signature still despite Leicester dropping their interest.
Pundit and ex-Celtic star Sutton though is adamant Edouard needs to start against FC Midtjylland.
“Odsonne Edouard, for me, has to start Tuesday night. I know he may be on his way, but in previous seasons [Virgil] Van Dijk got Celtic through to Champions League group stages. Edouard needs to do the same. The ball sticks with him,” Sutton said.
Edouard can still deliver for Celtic
Edouard’s future is up in the air, but right now Celtic need him desperately.
He’s the outstanding individual still in the squad. The French striker has 83 goals in 168 appearances for the Scottish giants.
Postecoglou has plenty of work still to do with his squad. Therefore, FC Midtjylland are likely to be a very stern challenge.
If Edouard is available to start next week, Sutton is spot on it’s a no-brainer to play him due to the fact he can turn up with a piece of magic.
