Chris Sutton says £42m Tottenham player can’t be relied upon

Cristian Romero has to be one of the most frustrating players in the Premier League for Tottenham.

The Argentine is undoubtedly a top-class player. He’s a World Cup winner and he was so solid for Tottenham at the start of the season.

However, his red card against Chelsea a few weeks ago showcased the other side of Romero’s game. The defender can also be rash, reckless and unreliable, and speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has questioned whether or not the defender can actually be trusted at the top level.

Can Romero be trusted?

Sutton shared his verdict on the defender.

“You look at the games, toe-to-toe with City, should’ve been out of sight against City. One thing I want to talk about from the Tottenham victory, Romero, if you’re a Spurs fan you watch that challenge. He’s a brilliant player isn’t he? Brilliant defender, but he kills them at times, he absolutely kills Spurs at times, it was a stupid challenge that should’ve been a red. He is so reckless, can he be trusted?” Sutton said.

Worth it

Romero is an untrustworthy player at times, but the trade-off between his abilities and his recklessness are worth it.

Let’s not pretend it’s impossible to win top titles with a player like Romero in the team.

David Luiz won everything there was to win during his time at Chelsea, and he was just as much of a liability as Romero at times, and, to a certain extent, he was even more unreliable.

However, just like Romero, on his day, Luiz could be the best player on the pitch against any given opposition.

Of course, in an ideal world, Romero would calm down a bit and refine his game, but that fire in his belly is also what makes him such a fierce competitor and tenacious defender.
