Rangers boss Steven Gerrard admitted he was “alarmed” by his side’s second-half performance in the defeat to Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.
The Gers were beaten 2-1 away to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership fixture and it was another sizeable blow to their title bid.
Scott Arfield’s first-half goal meant that the visitors were in front at half-time, but the Light Blues caved in the second-half and were undone by two late goals.
Stephen O’Donnell equalised in the 77th minute for Kilmarnock, before Eamonn Trophy netted an 88th minute winner to make the pressure count for the hosts.
Gerrard reflected on his team’s disappointing result after the game, which leaves them 10 points behind league leaders Celtic with a game in hand.
“That second-half performance alarmed me. We couldn’t handle the pressure in the second-half. We’ve done well in the first-half got ourselves in a real nice position, but the second-half we didn’t go out like a team in the position of us,” Gerrard said, as quoted by BT Sport Football.
Pundit Chris Sutton reacted to the manager’s comments on Twitter and highlighted the importance of them.
TBR’s View:
Rangers couldn’t handle the pressure put on them by Kilmarnock in the second 45 minutes of their defeat and it’s happened too many times since coming back from the winter break.
There is of course the added pressure of needing to win to try apply pressure on leaders Celtic, who look unstoppable at the moment and have bounced back emphatically to an Old Firm defeat in December.
Gerrard’s side can forget about a title push for now and they need to just focus on getting back to winning games on a consistent basis, with the defence the key area that needs to be improved on.
It’s easy to put the dip in the Rangers form down to simply pressure of being in a title race, but truthfully it’s just that individuals are making basic errors and are out of form.
