Chris Sutton reacts to Odsonne Edouard’s performance in the Europa League

Celtic boss Neil Lennon watched his side suffer another setback this season on Thursday night, as they were on the wrong end of a crushing 4-1 defeat at home to Sparta Prague in the Europa League group stages.

Lukas Julis starred with a hat-trick for the Czech visitors at Parkhead and they steamrolled their way to victory.

Celtic now face a long way back to try qualify from Group H in the Europa League, as they currently sit bottom of the table with one point from three games.

It’s been a horrid European campaign for the Bhoys so far that reached its lowest point in midweek and all eyes will be on how they react this weekend away to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership before the international break.

Pundit and ex-Celtic star Chris Sutton picked out the performance of centre-forward Odsonne Edouard as one of several negatives from the defeat.

The 22-year-old is yet to find his clinical touch since returning from a spell of isolation and he looked off the pace against Sparta Prague, as he lacked the kind of attacking threat he usually has in the final third.

“I don’t think he’s been at his best all season. He’s not the player he was. He showed some nice touches on the weekend, it didn’t happen for him tonight and he was a disappointment,” Sutton told BT Sport 3 (10:06pm, 5 November).

Edouard has set such high standards for the Scottish giants that when he drops five per cent below that it’s highlighted massively, but he’s got enough quality to bounce back and is going to be pivotal in a revival for Lennon’s team.

There are a number of Celtic individuals that have seen their levels slip massively this season and their European campaign looks in tattered, which is why fans won’t allow for any more slip ups in the league.
