Chris Sutton reacts as Rangers make statement over Celtic winning title

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson has told the club’s official Facebook page that he does not believe Celtic should be awarded the Scottish Premiership title until all 38 games are played – and Chris Sutton has reacted on Twitter.

Amid the current outbreak of Covid-19, the Scottish Premiership has been stopped indefinitely – while English football has been halted until April 3 at the very earliest. With a lack of action being taken, many are speculating on what could happen.

Indeed, options include pushing Euro 2020 back by 12 months, voiding this season, or even ending the season now with the current league positions remaining intact. That would see Celtic win their ninth consecutive title, as they sit 13 points clear.

Robertson gave a statement to the Gers’ official website, stating that he believes it would impact sporting integrity in Scotland if the authorities chose to hand Celtic an early title – despite Rangers having a game in hand and nine left to play.

“We believe that final standings can only be confirmed when all games have been completed, not before. Any attempt to finish the season with a significant amount of games still to play, impacts upon the integrity of sport in Scotland,” Robertson said.

“Furthermore, we are strongly opposed to playing games behind closed doors. Rangers fans have stuck by our club in the darkest of times. Their loyalty will not be forgotten and they will not be left behind.”

Celtic have been in sensational form since the return of Scottish football after the winter break, while Rangers have not. Indeed, Steven Gerrard’s side have picked up just four points from their last possible nine.

Hoops icon Sutton reacted to Robertson’s comments with a blunt response on Twitter, leaving it short but sweet. He Tweeted: “I had a hunch he might say that.”
