Manchester City and Liverpool are set to lock horns in one of the biggest fixtures in the English football calendar this Sunday.

In recent years, Manchester City v Liverpool was the clash of the titans between the two standout teams in the Premier League.

There have been some epic title tussles between the two clubs, including two in which Liverpool racked up more than 90 points but still lost to Man City.

However, the tables have now turned, and Liverpool are the more dominant of the two, sitting 17 points above the Citizens.

Chris Sutton has now predicted how Man City and Liverpool will fare in their 4:30pm kick-off at the Etihad Stadium.

Chris Sutton backs Liverpool to win 3-1 at Manchester City

The BBC Sport pundit began by talking about how poor Man City were in their Champions League loss at Real Madrid in midweek.

Sutton described their performance as “shambolic” and as if they had “waved the white flag” of surrender at the Bernabeu.

And while Sutton recognised that Liverpool weren’t exactly rampant at Aston Villa in midweek, he still feels they’ll run out 3-1 winners over Man City.

“City basically waved the white flag at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night and, without Erling Haaland, lacked belief against Real Madrid from the off,” Sutton wrote on BBC Sport.

“Let’s be frank, it was a shambolic performance from Pep Guardiola’s side, with a real lack of intensity.

“It ended up being really disappointing as a contest. Real were always favourites but when City lose, you at least expect them to go down fighting.

“Instead, it was over after less than five minutes. They never believed they could win and how many times have you said that about a Pep team?

“Liverpool had a tricky time of it against Villa in midweek but they must think they can get at this City side too.”

Manchester City v Liverpool early team news

Manchester City are sweating on the fitness of Erling Haaland for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool.

Haaland was spotted holding his knee after landing awkwardly during the 4-0 win over Newcastle last weekend before coming off.

The Norway international was an unused substitute in Man City’s loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League, along with Kevin De Bruyne.

Meanwhile, John Stones limped off at the Bernabeu after appearing to pull a muscle while playing a pass, and he’s now a doubt for the Liverpool game.

Fellow centre-back Manuel Akanji suffered an injury during the first leg of the Real Madrid tie and has since undergone surgery on an abductor injury.

Oscar Bobb and Rodri remain long-term absentees.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are hopeful that Cody Gakpo will return against Man City.

The Dutch winger missed Liverpool’s last two games as a result of a knock he sustained in the Merseyside derby at Everton last week.

Conor Bradley limped off with a hamstring injury against Villa and is expected to miss the next two games at least as the Reds medical team assesses him further.

The Northern Ireland international joins fellow defender Joe Gomez and midfielder Tyler Morton on the sidelines.
