Chris Sutton praises Liverpool individual after performance against Real Madrid

Chris Sutton raved about Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold following his individual display on Wednesday night against Real Madrid.

Liverpool bowed out of the Champions League competition yesterday in the quarter-final stage, after a 0-0 draw against Madrid at Anfield.

The Reds were beaten comprehensively 3-1 last week in the first leg, and couldn’t find the clinical touch in Wednesday’s second leg to get back into the tie.

It means that Madrid booked their spot in the semi-finals against Chelsea. Meanwhile, Manchester City face Paris Saint-German in the other side of the draw.

Pundit Sutton felt that Alexander-Arnold was a big positive for the Merseyside outfit against Madrid.

The 22-year-old right-back was the most creative Liverpool threat with some excellent service from wide areas, but his teammates were lacking in the final third.

“Absolutely,” Sutton responded on BT Sport 2 when asked if Alexander-Arnold was spectacular against Madrid (11:20pm, 14 April)

“Maybe he feels he has a point to prove after being criticised, fairly at times. Defensively he has been suspect at times this season, but there is no doubting his quality going forward.

“He did have a strong game defensively [against Madrid]… That weight of pass, he has such a clear mind what he wants to do.”

If you needed a reminder of what Alexander-Arnold can do, the Liverpool full-back showed he belongs on the elite stage with a standout performance against European heavyweights Madrid.

He was strong defensively, an area of his game which is usually heavily criticised, and going forward posed a massive threat.

Alexander-Arnold is under the spotlight from now until the end of the season to see if he can force his way back into Gareth Southgate’s England squad, and his form of late has seemed to improve dramatically.
