Chris Sutton has taken to Twitter to post his reaction to reports Rangers have given Steven Gerrard permission to hold talks as the Englishman closes in on the Ibrox exit.

Gerrard is looking set to become the next Aston Villa manager. It has been reported by The Telegraph that he has been given permission to speak to the Premier League side.

In fact, the report claimed that Gerrard is expected to be confirmed as the Villans’ new boss in the next 48 hours.

It is a huge blow for Rangers. And it is potentially one that supporters may not have seen coming when it was announced when Dean Smith’s departure was dismissed on Sunday.

It is not the first Premier League job Gerrard has been linked with in recent times.

He was asked about speculation linking him with the Newcastle United job in the wake of Steve Bruce’s exit last month.

Gerrard dismissed the links, insisting that he was happy and settled at Ibrox. Unfortunately, those comments look set to come back and haunt him.

Sutton – who played for Villa – has taken to Twitter in the wake of these latest reports and seemingly mocked the Gers by joking that he thought the 41-year-old was not looking to leave…

Rangers fans may feel betrayed by Gerrard leaving after comments

Villa are a big club with a huge amount of potential. So some will certainly understand why Gerrard is seemingly set to move on.

But some Rangers fans will feel betrayed. Newcastle are also a massive club. And no club in world football probably boasts more potential than the Magpies right now.

So Gerrard being so dismissive of the links may have left some Gers fans thinking that a move to Villa was almost as unlikely.

Obviously, it now appears that that is not the case.
