Chris Sutton has told BT Sport’s UEFA Champions League Highlights Show that he believes Liverpool attacker Mo Salah is the only Reds forward that has remained “exceptionally consistent” throughout the 2020-21 campaign.

Salah, 28, made it 25 for the season as Liverpool cruised into the last eight of the Champions League with an excellent 2-0 second-leg win over Julian Nagelsmann’s men. Salah opened the scoring, cutting inside and finishing neatly from 12 yards.

Divock Origi’s brilliant low cross was expertly tucked home by Sadio Mane to make it 2-0 – and 4-0 on aggregate. Salah now boasts stats of 25 goals and four assists in 39 games – and a whopping 119 goals in 191 Liverpool appearances.

Sutton has raved about Salah’s brilliant performance and finish on Wednesday night, and he claims that the Egyptian has proved to be Liverpool’s only consistent player in attack – proving to be more effective than the likes of Mane and Roberto Firmino.

“He is the one forward player this season that has been exceptionally consistent,” Sutton says. “He chops back in on his left and it is a lovely finish. The link-up play with Diogo Jota, you don’t let Salah back in on his left – he won’t keep missing opportunities.”

TBR’s view – Can Salah take Liverpool out of the mire?

They need more than just Salah. While having th Egyptian on top form last night, and Liverpool looking like their old selves – they need to finally get their defence in order. Putting Fabinho back into midfield was a huge step forward.

It means that Jurgen Klopp is ready to trust both Nat Phillips and Ozan Kabak at centre-back, and it brings back more of a natural flow to Liverpool. Fabinho needs to stay in midfield and they need the likes of Virgil van Dijk or Joe Gomez back.

Only then, will Liverpool finally claw themselves out of the mess they have got themselves in.
