Chris Sutton laughs off Tottenham’s chance of winning Premier League title

Chris Sutton has laughed off Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of winning the Premier League title on Stadium Astro – claiming there are better squads in the mix and reckons Spurs are too reliant on both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Spurs returned to the top of the Premier League by nabbing a point and a clean sheet against one of Sutton’s former sides in Chelsea. That is, despite the absence of injured defender Toby Alderweireld – who was replaced by Joe Rodon.

Tottenham have been in excellent form – boasting the best defence in the Premier League having conceded just nine goals in 10 league games. They sit level on points with champions Liverpool, while Manchester City are way down in tenth place.

Sutton has tipped Manchester City to win the league despite a poor start to the campaign, writing off Tottenham’s chances of Premier League success. However, Sutton reckons Spurs can win the Europa League under Jose Mourinho.

“They’re not going to win it, come on,” Sutton said. “It’s a strange season, but my tip for the title are just coming good – Manchester City. Pep has a point to prove, Jose has been a brilliant manager. There are better squads out there than Spurs.

“Too reliant on Harry Kane and Son. Injuries to those and they will fall away. He [Mourinho] still is a great manager, he’s gone to Spurs and the fans are desperate for a trophy. I tip Spurs for the Europa League, not the Premier League.”

TBR’s view – Spurs certainly have a chance, given squad depth

While Spurs may not have as many match-winners as Manchester City or Liverpool, they do have enormous squad depth after a stunning summer window that saw them bring in some excellent players – and the return of Gareth Bale.

If Harry Kane was to get injured, Spurs could bring in Carlos Vinicius or Gareth Bale. If Son gets injured, Bale could again come in – as could Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela or Steven Bergwijn. Spurs have excellent depth and that is crucial in the race for the title.
