Chris Sutton picked out the quality of Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain following his performance for England on Thursday night.
The 26-year-old scored the opening goal in a thrilling 7-0 victory for Gareth Southgate’s side against Montenegro at Wembley.
It means that the Three Lions will be at next summer’s European Championships and there is real completion for places in the centre of the park.
Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first England start since March 2018, as he’s had to watch on from the sidelines and recover from a long-term injury.
He’s been eased back into action this campaign at club level by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and is now back in Southgate’s plans.
The box-to-box midfielder has four goals in 14 Liverpool appearances this season across all competitions and showed his class in front of goal on the international stage.
His goal against Montenegro came inside the penalty area, as he cushioned down a pass from Ben Chilwell and produced a low powerful finish.
Pundit Sutton was impressed by Oxalde-Chamberlain’s display for England at Wembley.
“Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, on his first England start since March 2018, opened the scoring in wonderful style,” Sutton wrote in the Daily Mail.
“He set himself with his first touch then blasted a ferocious shot into the back of the net with his second. He made driving runs from midfield and was relentless in the centre of the pitch.
Oxlade-Chamberlain had to watch on from the stands during the majority of last season, but it’s great news for both club and country that he’s back on the pitch again.
He is a central midfielder that adds an extra goal threat when he’s playing for either Liverpool or England, something which is valuable to both teams.
Liverpool usually operate with a solid midfield trio that do all the ugly work, but the introduction of Oxlade-Chamberlain does give them more imagination and it’s a great option for Klopp.
Meanwhile, Southgate has so many options to select from but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Oxlade-Chamberlain get the nod next summer at the Euros if he’s available.
