Chris Sutton has told the Daily Mail that Leeds United need to bring in a number of signings to solve their lack of strength in depth ahead of the 2020-21 Premier League campaign – and even mentioned Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Leeds have gained promotion to the Premier League after being confirmed as Championship winners, and have already signed two of their four on-loan players in Helder Costa and Illan Meslier from Wolves and Lorient.
That has seen spending reach £20million already. A deal for Ben White is in the pipeline, while Jack Harrison is expected to sign for Leeds again – permanently or on a third loan spell.
Plenty of players have been linked and owner Andrea Radrizzani even discussed potential moves for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani earlier this summer, as per Football Italia.
But Sutton reckons more signings are needed at Elland Road in order to bring strength in depth to the Yorkshire club. The outspoken pundit even discussed Ibrahimovic – who is expected to remain at AC Milan.
“They need to get their recruitment right. Leeds were the best team in the Championship by some way and won’t show any fear among the big boys. Marcelo Bielsa will have them organised and playing on the front foot.
“My only concern is their lack of strength in depth and that’s why signings are needed. But it’s exciting to have Leeds back after 16 years away,” Sutton continued. “They’re even being linked with Zlatan Ibrahimovic — imagine!”
TBR’s view – What do Leeds need this summer?
If the club do complete deals for White and Harrison, then spending is likely to eclipse £50million and that is without the Whites bringing in any new players. Another centre-back after White is crucial.
Perhaps a new goalkeeper if Kiko Casilla leaves, cover for Kalvin Phillips, a permanent partner for Mateusz Klich in midfield and a proven Premier League goalscorer should all be on Victor Orta’s shortlist.
