Chris Sutton has told BT Sport’s Highlights Show he has noticed a problem at Rangers emerging at centre-back, following Thursday night’s win.

Rangers went into Thursday’s match against Brondby in dire need of a win – after losing their first two games. But they secured a 2-0 win.

Leon Balogun and Kemar Roofe both scored in the matter of a few minutes, proving to be the only goals of the game. Balogun went off with an injury.

The Nigeria international seemingly injured his hamstring, joining Filip Helander on the treatment table – who has recently undergone surgery.

Jack Simpson is an option, but was not included in the Europa League squad. It saw Calvin Bassey partner Connor Goldson, replacing Balogun.

Sutton allured to the centre-back crisis, with Rangers also allowing Niko Katic to go on loan in Croatia. He thinks it is becoming a problem at Ibrox.

“They’ve got a few problems there at centre-back. Helander has had an operation, Balogun now has an injury. They’re a bit stretched there.”

Do Rangers need to sign a free agent, after Sutton comments?

In hindsight, allowing Katic to go out on loan and overlooking Simpson for a Europa League spot will be a mistake. A change needs to be made.

With three Europa League group games left, Rangers will be hoping Balogun can return from his muscle problem sooner rather than later.

They will be using Bassey at centre-back in training. But to ease the pressure, should they look at the free agent market?

Plenty of options are available – including the form of France international Eliaquim Mangala, ex-Benfica man Sidnei and plenty more.
