Chris Sutton has ripped into Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka for his red card at the weekend, admitting he would understand if the midfielder no longer had a future at the Emirates Stadium.

The £100,000-a-week star (Spotrac) was sent off during Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat at home to Burnley after he grabbed midfielder Ashley Westwood by the throat just 10 minutes into the second-half.

Mikel Arteta’s side went onto lose via Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s own goal and it leaves the club with just 13 points from their opening 12 league games.

Arsenal host in-form Southampton on Wednesday night in their next league fixture, with the pressure really starting to build going into that match.

Sutton lambasted Xhaka for his incident against Burnley and pointed out it’s not his first controversial moment at Arsenal.

“There is an argument now that Xhaka has done stupid things so many times in an Arsenal jersey that he shouldn’t play again,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

“And do you know what I absolutely understand that. I get that… That was ridiculous what Xhaka did yesterday.”

TBR’s View:

Xhaka’s dismissal against Burnley certainly had a big effect on his team eventually losing the game, as they were enjoying their best spell of possession prior to his sending off and he gave visitors Burnley a lift.

Aged 28, the central midfielder is regarded as one of the senior players within the group and he showed little leadership at the weekend.

The Switzerland international has divided opinion with the club’s fanbase since he joined in 2016, but there appears to be a growing number frustrated by his antics.
