Newcastle face West Ham on Monday in a game that could really help them build even more momentum.

The Magpies haven’t been at their best this season, but after two wins in a row against difficult opposition in the shape of Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, momentum is starting to build.

Meanwhile, West Ham are in a bit of a rut at the moment.

The Hammers sit 14th in the Premier League table, and Julen Lopetegui is under pressure right now.

This has the potential to be a cracking match between two teams who need to win.

Writing in his column for the BBC, Chris Sutton has now shared his prediction for how this game will go on Monday.

Chris Sutton predicts Newcastle vs West Ham

Sutton shared his verdict on how this game will pan out.

The pundit reckons Newcastle will simply have too much for West Ham, tipping the Magpies to win 2-1 at home.

“It feels to me like Southampton’s Russell Martin is the manager who is closest to the edge at the moment but West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui is probably not too far behind him,” Sutton wrote.

“I was at this game last season, when Newcastle won 4-3 after being 3-1 down, and it was probably one of the results that meant Lopetegui’s predecessor, David Moyes, was not offered a new deal.

“I think Hammers fans have been underwhelmed by what they’ve seen since Lopetegui arrived, because it is not working out under him. As I’ve said before, I don’t quite know what kind of team they are trying to be.

“I don’t see them getting any joy at St James’ Park this time, either. Alexander Isak looked back to his best when Newcastle beat Forest last time out, and they should be too strong for West Ham too.”

Will Julen Lopetegui be sacked?

As Sutton says, the loss to Newcastle last season may have been a key factor in David Moyes losing his job at West Ham, and Lopetegui could be in the same position here.

Indeed, Lopetegui is under pressure right now, and based on the results this season, it’s not hard to understand why.

West Ham are really struggling at the moment, and another defeat here could be one of the final nails in Lopetegui’s coffin, especially with a tough game against Arsenal coming up next weekend.

West Ham are looking at Maurizio Sarri as a potential Lopetegui replacement, while Edin Terzic is also an option for the Hammers.

There’s only been one managerial casualty in the Premier League so far this season, but don’t be shocked if Lopetegui is the next manager sacked after Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United departure.
