Chris Sutton hammers form of Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has taken a hammering from Chris Sutton, as the pundit has named him his worst signing in the Premier League so far this season.

Theoretically the 31-year-old isn’t a new signing for the Gunners and he joined them back in 2018 from Borussia Dortmund, but he has recently signed a new contract at the Emirates Stadium.

The centre-forward penned a £250,000-a-week deal (Independent) with the North London club midway through September, which was a huge coup for them to keep their talisman.

He netted in the opening day win over Fulham, but has scored just once in the seven Premier League games that have followed and the team have struggled in attack without his usual potency.

Sutton has singled him out as the dampest squib of the Premier League season and stated his performances would leave fans seated if they were allowed into stadiums:

“The worst? We were all told that Arsenal tying down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be like a new signing and, after a lot hullabaloo, he put pen to paper,” Sutton told the Daily Mail.

“Since then, he’s scored once from the spot. If fans were as stadiums, he wouldn’t exactly have had them on the edge of their seats.”

TBR’s View:

Aubameyang is a goal machine that remains Arsenal’s best player and his record of 74 goals in 119 club appearances speaks for itself.

His new contract has coincided with a huge dip in form for the attacker, who has mainly been used as a left-winger this season rather than as a central striker.

It looks like the international break is going to come at a good time and manager Mikel Arteta quickly needs him to try rediscover his best form, especially as they have tough league games with Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham just around the corner.
