Chris Sutton full of praise for Rangers player who could have been ‘banished’

Chris Sutton has heaped praise on Rangers youngster Nathan Patterson during BT Sport’s UEFA Europa League highlights show, after the young right-back came on to score against Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

Patterson, 19, was one of five Rangers players that attended a party earlier this month – along with Bongani Zungu, Brian Kinnear, Calvin Bassey and Dapo Mebude. They have since been reprimanded, and gone under a period of self-isolation.

Bassey, Zungu and Patterson were included in the Rangers side that beat Antwerp on Thursday night, winning 5-2 on the night and 9-5 on aggregate. With the scoreline reading 1-1 at half-time, Patterson came off the bench to strike.

With James Tavernier injured, Leon Balogun was used out of position at right-back but struggled. On came Patterson and within 20 seconds, he scored – finishing superbly from the angle. Sutton praised him, after a tumultuous month.

“There was talk about being banished at Rangers after a breach – but Gerrard put him in the squad and wow did it pay off. What an impact. He’s a young lad, he’s made a mistake, but he is a fine, fine talent. He’s going to have a big future,” Sutton said.

TBR’s view – Can Patterson save Rangers a lump of cash?

Clearly, the injury to captain and star player Tavernier has opened up a weakness in the Rangers squad and that is a lack of a right-back. Without Tavernier, Rangers do not have an experienced option – with Matt Polster leaving last summer.

But in Patterson, they might just put a halt on signing a right-sided defender. Bassey can do a job on the right, but prefers left-back or centre-back. So, in Patterson, Rangers certainly have an exciting talent and his goal might just prove he is ready.

Instead of signing someone and making Patterson third choice, Gerrard should give him a chance as Tavernier back-up.
