Chris Sutton has told BT Sport that George Edmundson would “fit the mould” at Rangers if Steven Gerrard’s side look to land the Oldham Athletic defender this summer, after being linked.
According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (19/5; page 63), Rangers are interested in the 21-year-old centre-back after an excellent 2018-19 campaign with the League Two side.
Edmundson has clocked up an enormous 54 appearances in all competitions for Oldham this season, including seven appearances under Paul Scholes. Edmundson has helped Oldham keep 16 clean sheets, and scored two goals.
Celtic icon Sutton believes Edmundson would be a strong signing for Rangers, with Steven Gerrard likely to bring in a centre-back this summer as Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley are expected to leave.

“Raw, aggressive player,” Sutton said. “It is interesting Rangers are going about their business, in terms of bringing in young, hungry players. It is not always that, because Greg Stewart is a bit of a strange one.
“I haven’t seen him [Edmundson] play but I am led to believe that he is a really talented, young, aggressive player which would fit the mould for Rangers.”
TBR’s view
Edmundson certainly is a promising player, but Rangers must remember that he has only been playing in the fourth tier of English football – a standard well blow that of the Scottish Premiership.
The chances of Edmundson playing at a higher level that League Two are strong. But is he good enough for Rangers? Not yet, even if he is only worth a bargain £500,000.
It remains to be seen if the defender will join Rangers, but director of football Mark Allen has to be sure that he really is worth it.
