Chris Sutton has told the Daily Mail that he expects Norwich City and Sheffield United to gain promotion automatically from the Championship, but reckons Leeds United will fail to win the play-offs.
Leeds currently sit third in the Championship table after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United last time out. It saw Chris Wilder’s side leapfrog Leeds into second place, thanks to Chris Basham’s second-half strike.
With eight league games to play, Norwich are three points clear of the Blades and four of Leeds. West Bromwich Albion remain in fourth place, six points behind Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Sutton, who played for both Norwich and Villa during his career, reckons the Canaries will be joined by Sheffield United and Villa in gaining promotion. He claims Leeds will be forced to wait for another season.
“Norwich are brimming with confidence and should go up. Sheffield United to join them and Aston Villa via the play-offs,” Sutton claimed.
Norwich have one hand on promotion. They are scraping results, winning with flair and scoring late goals. It is the perfect mix that contributes to an excellent winning mentality. The Blades are no different.
Chris Wilder’s side have not conceded in their last seven league games. They look as though they will maintain their excellent form – but with only one point in it, the pressure is huge.
Leeds take on Millwall on Saturday, while Sheffield United play host to Bristol City. Both sides can catch Norwich up, who then face Middlesbrough away in an evening kick-off.
