Chris Sutton delivers worrying verdict on Neil Lennon’s Celtic future

Chris Sutton has told the Daily Record Celtic podcast that he believes chief executive Peter Lawwell could consider the future of Celtic manager Neil Lennon over the next few weeks – following Saturday’s defeat to Rangers.

Rangers eased to a 2-0 win over Celtic at Parkhead and could have scored more goals. The Gers dominated from start to finish, as Connor Goldson netted a brace against Lennon’s side – though the Hoops were without four key figures.

James Forrest, Ryan Christie, Odsonne Edouard and Christopher Jullien were all missing from the side. But the Hoops still boasted plenty of expensive talent that came up short. Lennon was tactically outwitted by Steven Gerrard.

Celtic icon Sutton thinks that if Lennon continues to struggle over the course of the next six matches, starting with Thursday’s match against AC Milan, that Lawwell could have a decision to make over his old Hoops teammate’s future.

“Neil Lennon has real thinking to do,” Sutton said. “If he doesn’t turn it round soon, in the next few games, and Celtic fans are thinking and all about the 10, Europe matters more now. Lennon needs performances and results.

“The next few games are remarkably tricky. The fact Celtic haven’t clicked yet is becoming a massive problem, Neil will know that. Otherwise, I think Peter Lawwell will be thinking we need a different voice, if they struggle in the next six games.

“Question marks have to be asked about the spirit in the dressing room. Questions will be asked if Lennon has lost the players. It is not a happy place at this moment in time. He needs to turn things round quickly. There needs to be a drastic change.”

TBR’s view – Is Lennon’s future at Celtic really in doubt?

Prior to Saturday’s defeat to Rangers, Celtic had won eight games in all competitions on the bounce – though some games they struggled to win. They have lost just three of their 28 fixtures in 2020, and only five in 2019-20.

Lennon was without numerous first-team players, which is simply not his fault. The performance on Saturday was poor, but winning the game in hand pushes Celtic to within a point of Rangers. There is plenty of time to go, Lennon deserves time.
