Chris Sutton has sent a warning to Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, claiming that his excellent reputation could instantly diminish if he continues to struggle – following a difficult start to the season, during the Daily Record’s Celtic podcast.
Edouard, 22, had a hand in 46 goals last season – scoring 27 and creating 19. This season, the France under-21 star has still netted six goals in 10 league and cup appearances but has certainly struggled to have the same impact he did last term.
The former PSG striker has been diagnosed with the virus that is currently causing an epidemic across the world, and it remains a race against time to see if Edouard will be for the the Old Firm clash against Rangers after the international break.
Prior to the news that Edouard has picked up the virus, Sutton criticised Edouard for this season’s form and warned the Frenchman that he could instantly lose his excellent reputation that came alongside scoring 27 goals last term.

“There’s so many players off the boil,” Sutton said. “You’re a striker, you’re reliant on service. The combinations have not yet worked for Edouard. What I would be thinking if I was him, he has carved himself a reputation as an outstanding footballer.
“But that can disappear really quickly. When they come back after the international break, it is really important that he hits the ground running and we see the player that we saw off last season.”
TBR’s view – Is Sutton right to criticise Edouard?
Or is it Celtic’s performances as an entire side that have seen Edouard struggle in the final third? Neil Lennon has chopped and changed formations, personnel and a lack of fans could also be playing a part.
The fact of the matter is that while Edouard is not in the form as he was in last season, neither are any of the other Celtic players. If the Hoops get back to their best, so will Edouard – after he has recovered from the recently contracted virus.
