Chris Sutton delivers verdict on Liel Abada's Celtic debut
Liel Abada scored on his Celtic debut on Tuesday night as the Hoops drew 1-1 with FC Midtjylland in Ange Postecoglou’s first competitive match. In the first leg of a Champions League second qualifying round tie, Abada put Celtic ahead. Chris Sutton has given his verdict on Abada.
A £3.4million signing, 19-year-old Abada was perhaps a surprise inclusion in Postecoglou’s line-up. But it quickly paid off, as the Israel international tapped home Celtic’s opener, following a Ryan Christie shot that was parried into Abada’s path. However, he was substituted before half-time.
The winger was taken off after his fellow countryman Nir Bitton’s red card, bringing his debut to a premature end. However, many applauded Abada on social media for his performance. Celtic legend Sutton was also quick to praise Abada, giving his verdict on Premier Sports’ coverage.
“Looked sharp, looked lively down that right hand side,” Sutton said on Premier Sports (Tuesday, 9.45PM). “Abada, for a young man, he scored a lot of goals at his previous club. He is really switched on and he can anticipate things. He can’t miss, but what a start for the young man.”
Did Abada do enough to convince Celtic fans – amid Sutton comments?
Without a doubt. Following his arrival, Celtic fans were somewhat dubious given he arrives as a somewhat unknown – having only previously impressed in Israeli football. But his goalscoring pedigree was quickly on show, showing instinct to react first and open his Celtic account.
While there is plenty to do to show he is not another young, expensive flop like Patryk Klimala or Maryan Shved, Abada has certainly hit the ground running. It will be interesting to see if he starts in Denmark next week.
