Steven Gerrard has been appointed as the new manager of Aston Villa this morning. He leaves Rangers after three-and-a-half years in charge of the Ibrox-based giants. Following his announcement at Villa, former striker Chris Sutton has reacted on Twitter.
This one has come out of the blue – no pun intended! It seemed as though Gerrard was building something special at Rangers and they are in the middle of a title defence.
Rangers ended the dominance of Celtic last season. Gerrard led his team to a 55th Scottish Premiership title and in the process, stopped the Hoops from claiming a tenth title in succession.
Aston Villa recently parted company with Dean Smith. He had helped the Villans back into the Premier League by winning promotion from the Championship.
Smith helped establish the West Midlands-based club as a Premier League outfit. Now, Gerrard will perhaps be tasked with taking the club to the next level during his three-and-a-half-year deal.
The 41-year-old did some brilliant things at Rangers and he leaves the club in a better place on the pitch. He departs with a win ratio of 64% and takes charge of Villa immediately.
What has Chris Sutton said about Villa appointing Gerrard?
For a former Celtic player, he’s typically quite happy at Rangers losing a huge asset from their ranks. He might now feel that the Hoops have a chance to win the title.
Sutton actually played eight times for Villa, scoring one goal towards the end of his career. He was a hero at Celtic though and also claimed a Premier League winners medal at Blackburn.
He’s delivered a pretty respectable tweet following the appointment but in true Chris Sutton style, he’s been unable to help himself from digging the knife into Rangers too.
