Callum McGregor has signed a new five-year contract with Celtic in a deal that will keep him at Parkhead until the summer of 2024 – and Hoops legend Chris Sutton has delivered an immediate verdict on Twitter.

McGregor, 26, has missed just one game for Celtic this season and has started all 24 of his league and cup appearances for Neil Lennon’s side. He remains absolutely pivotal to their pursuit of 10 in a row, despite being linked with a move down south.

The midfielder – who is just two appearances away from reaching a whopping 250 outings for the Scottish champions – was previously contracted until 2023, but the new deal deters any interest from the likes of Leicester City in his services.

Celtic confirmed that they had agreed a deal with McGregor for a further year than his previous deal, which is seen more as a reward for his excellent performances and consistency in the green and white of Celtic.

McGregor is expected to make his 25th appearance of the season on Thursday evening when Celtic travel to Italy to take on Serie A side Lazio in the Europa League. They will be hoping for a similar result that saw Celtic win 2-1 at home.

Former Celtic striker and outspoken pundit Sutton declared that the deal to keep McGregor and tie him down to Celtic is “good news” for the Hoops – with McGregor seen as Scott Brown’s long-term replacement by many.
